The Eurotunnel train line
connects the UK with France and enters the
undersea tunnel at the French town Calais. Its
proximity to the sea causes a high level of salt
contamination on insulators and cables, and the
insulators therefore need to be washed on a
regular basis.
In October 2002, a DayCorII
camera was used to check the quality of the
washing, and locate corona and arcing on the
insulators. It immediately became evident that
insulators on only one side of the railway were
washed effectively. The camera was able to
detect the insulators that still showed effects
of corona and had either been missed or
improperly washed. Mounted onto a washing
railway trailer, the UV camera provides a simple
but effective way of determining which
insulators require high priority action. |
